Barista Skills Intermediate

Our SCA Barista Skills Intermediate Course is the next step in your professional development. This 2 day course takes your barista skills to an advanced level, it is designed for those who already have a solid foundational knowledge of coffee and are ready to deepen their coffee expertise. Focuses on refining technical expertise, deepening coffee knowledge and building your practical skills beyond the basics learnt at Foundation level.

You’ll explore how origin, processing, and brewing variables influence flavour, while mastering workflow efficiency, sensory evaluation, and customer service essentials.

Combining theory with practical assessments, this internationally recognised certification, if you choose to do the exam, equips you with the skills and confidence to deliver exceptional coffee consistently in a professional setting.

Here are the key skills you’ll learn:

Grinder Calibration & Espresso Variables: Master precise adjustments for grind size, dose, extraction time and yield to achieve consistent, high-quality espresso shots.

Milk Science & Advanced Latte Art: Learn advanced milk texturing techniques for silky micro foam and create complex latte art patterns with precision.

Sensory Evaluation: Get an introduction to sensory skills, where you will develop tasting skills to assess flavour balance, diagnose extraction issues, and understand how origin, processing, and roast affect taste.

Coffee Theory: Explore the impact of coffee variety, origin, and processing methods on flavour profiles.

Workflow Management: Optimise efficiency and consistency in a busy café environment.

Equipment Care: Learn maintenance routines for espresso machines and grinders to ensure longevity and performance.

Customer Service & Business Practices: Understand service standards and basic operational principles for professional barista roles.

You can attend the course without taking the examination. The Examination fee of approximately €50, separate from the course fee, is paid directly to the SCA by either the student or our Trainers on behalf of the learner.
